Area Description: Hannibal, Missouri, is located at the crossroads of major east-west and north-south highways and is 100 miles north of St. Louis, MO, and 100 miles west of Springfield, IL. Site Description: Garth Woodside Mansion is an 11-room bed and breakfast and event venue located in Hannibal, Missouri. The Inn has played an important role in the history of its home city and in the life of its most famous resident, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). Local tourism is largely based on Hannibal’s connection to the author’s lore. Attractions include museums, riverboat cruises, theater, and galleries. While leisure travel to this market is a given, a strong business community supplements occupancy throughout the year.
Structural Description: The Main Inn, a spectacular Italianate-style mansion, was built in 1871 and while it retains much of its architectural charm, the property has received countless updates to its systems and facilities. Porches, decks, and patios provide ample space throughout the property for outdoor relaxation. First floor common areas include a formal living room, a formal dining room and a parlor as well as a conference room, a giftshop and a powder room. A spacious restaurant and kitchen addition at the back of the Inn. The first floor is also home to a laundry room, a small office, living room for owners and a private staircase that leads to the owner’s two-bedroom second-floor apartment. There are four guest rooms on the second floor and four guest rooms on the third floor.
The Cottages are a short stroll from the Mansion and inn parking lot, which has 28 parking spaces. There are five guest accommodations within the Inn’s three cottages. (Two ground level rooms are currently used for storage). Guestrooms range from a quality standard to a capacious two-level cottage with a king bed, a fireplace and cathedral ceiling, a loft living room, an enormous spa bathroom with a fireplace, a kitchen and a private deck outfitted with a hot tub.
Weddings and events account for 20% of business – the success of this income stream is due to the Inn’s purpose built 2,500 square foot pavilion, a large gazebo for ceremonies, a patio, decks, restrooms, storage, and a full catering kitchen.
